Experts agree that, care should be focused on patients because the outcome of treatment depends on how the health care providers relate to patients (Reynolds, 2009). Unlike the convectional way of caring for patients that focuses on healthcare provider, the hospital, and technology, patient-centered care revolves around the patient psychological needs. Patient centered care takes an in-depth look at patients’ emotional, spiritual believes, and overall patient satisfaction. This type of care goes further to reach out to other family members of the patient, involving them in the caring process. It is also believed that patients make better decisions since other family members are involve. Patient-centered care also requires that healthcare providers work towards efficiency and patient safety. Therefore, work should be within a framework that promotes patient safety. For example, when offering radiology services, health care providers should keep in mind factors like radiation that might affect the patient (Reynolds, 2009).
Cultural Competence
Cultural competence in healthcare involves assessing a patient’s cultural background including his perception, cultural practices, and patient’s values, and adapt to the patient uniqueness to generate better health outcomes. This type of competence should ideally produce quality service to the satisfaction of the patient. Cultural competence upholds that every individual is unique because people come from different backgrounds and therefore, perceive things differently. More so, healthcare provider’s values should not influence the type of care for patients. To prevent this, healthcare providers should be equipped with enough knowledge, skills, and a clear understanding of the diverse population they serve (Hines, 2012).
Comparing and Contrast of Cultural Competence and Patient Center Care
Patient-centered care advocates for empathy and understanding of a patient’s physiological needs while cultural competency acknowledges the importance of culture and its role in patient care. Both approaches focus on respect, understanding, and uniqueness of patients, but in different context, one is cultural while the other is more of psychological. While patient-centered care looks at the immediate psychological needs, cultural competence focuses on the cultural background in assessing the appropriate care that needs to be provided.
