Example: Chris Ma is the head manager of the training department in Yuanfudao, which is a high-tech company that specifies in online education and other related services. In order to develop more talent, the training department opens training positions to the employees on a regular basis. Once an employee passes certain tests, he/she would be qualified to transfer to new positions in the training department. One of the most important part of Chris Ma’s job is to communicate with these employees ad persuade them into the job transfer. However, sometimes employees are hesitant about the job transfer, because they feel uncertain about their future career prospect in the new position. According to Chris Ma, the technique that he uses the most is the two-sided argument approach, where he would elaborate on the pros and cons of the position as a trainer, and convey these information to the employees. By providing a thorough analysis to the person being persuaded, he relies primarily on reason, not emotions, in his persuasion. However, he would also incorporate his own experiences in the training department into the persuasion. In his opinion, in order to be persuasive, the influencer has to be objective and informative, so that he/she could help the person being persuaded to make an informed decision. According to Chris Ma, these experiences of persuading others helped him to develop his empathy towards other people. He intends to develop more rhetorical techniques to be a more skilled influencer.
