- Read the listening booklet “Effective Listening” and complete the assessment “Assess Your Listening Skills” for Monday’s class.
- In “Speaking as a Leader” read chapters 8 to 12 – these chapters will explain the different parts of the script template in chapter 8. These are short chapters.
- Answer the following questions from Speaking as a Leader.
Do not use point form. Write out your sentences in full. Summarize all answers in your own words. You do not need to write long paragraphs for each answer. You need to focus on clearly stating the key point for each.
a) What is the role of a “grabber” and explain why it is important.
b) List the 6 types of Literary Grabbers and describe each of them.
c) Give an example for each of the literary grabbers.
d) Why is the subject important?
e) What is the importance of the message?
f) What are the five characteristics that a message should have? Ch.11
g) Give three examples of a message. Do not take the examples from the book – pick a topic and make up your own message.
h) Explain the difference between the subject and the message?
i) Describe what structural statement is and why it is important.
j) Give an example of a structural statement.
k) Explain the five guidelines to help organize your script. Ch.12
l) What is the role of the body of your script?
m) Describe each of the “five patterns of organization” that can be used in the body of your script. Pages 106 to 111. You will choose one of the patterns for your Persuasion script.
n) What does the term “call to action” mean?
